CONSTRUCTION OF THE CABINS

A FAMILY PROJECT

This project was a family affair and came to life during a year off between 2010 and 2011.

The whole structure came to a halt for a year so that it could come to fruition. Charles, Béatrice and their four children put their thinking caps on, resulting in this unique accommodation project in the Dordogne. With their extensive experience in the tourism industry, it didn’t take long for Charles and Béatrice to come up with the perfect project. For the first time, the family discovered the joy of taking a few weeks off during the summer holidays - a dream! However, work quickly began on the foundations of all of the cabins. Oh yes, a project must always be built on solid foundations! First of all, the treetop cabins, which were mainly built using wood from the estate.

Then came the round cabins. As lovers of their region and its architecture, the aim was to get as close as possible to the dry stone ‘bories’ that are typical of the Périgord. It was a lot of work, but what an amazing result!

Local businesses and artisans then became involved in this massive project.

All of the wood used came from the estate (poplar, oak, chestnut, Douglas fir) and also, in keeping with the local economy, from the surrounding areas of the Dordogne.

The treetop cabins were built during the first year. These unique dwellings required a lot of work. First of all the cabins, but also the large staircases that turned and turned again… It was best not to leave a box of screws or a hammer at the bottom... it’s never easy working in space! The round cabins were designed during the second year. This was an easier job as they are fixed to the ground. The hard part?

The round shape of the buildings. This small detail was new to the team and required a lot of thought. It’s hard to ask a mason to build something round because it’s the opposite to what they normally do. José, a ‘Les Cabanes’ employee, often said laughingly “what is this, it’s all twisted!”

It took two years to finish all of the cabins (six treetop and four round ones).

This project was made possible thanks to this great family team and talented artisans. We would like to thank them all for this human and unusual project.

Today we are continuing to develop this adventure and that is thanks to you, our holiday-makers: by coming each year, you enable us to improve our concept.

Thank you all for everything!
