Périgord noir

Our department, the Dordogne

‘Les Cabanes de Jeanne’ are situated in the heart of the Dordogne, a department in the Nouvelle- Aquitaine region which is named after the river that runs through it. Our department, which is also called Périgord, is divided into four parts:

● Périgord Vert (green) to the north, whose colour evokes that of the meadows and forests of holm oak and chestnut.

● Périgord Blanc (white) to the centre and north-west, whose name reflects the colour of the limestone soil of this region. ● Périgord Pourpre (purple) to the south and south-west, around Bergerac, named after the many wine-growing areas to be found there.

● Périgord Noir (black) - the most beautiful one! - which, historically, is the oldest of the four. The black refers to the darkness of the foliage of the holm oak forests and the rich soil.

Château de Commarque

Château de Commarque

The Château de Commarque is a medieval castle built between the 12th and 14th centuries, and is probably the most intricate grouping of medieval buildings in the Périgord. Indeed, this co-seigniory housed various seigniors who shared the different towers in the fortified village. Find out about the history of the castle and the Commarque family on a guided tour given by their descendants.
